Can You Drink THC Drinks While Working? Here’s The Real Deal

The rise of THC-infused beverages as a discreet and convenient alternative to smoking or edibles has been liberating for many looking for an alc-alternate cocktail option. But the blurred lines between cannabis consumption and work culture, especially with remote work, can be confusing. Is it okay to open that THC-infused beverage during a workday happy hour like you might a beer? Well, there are a few things you just may want to consider:

  1. The Legal Landscape

The cannabis industry is evolving at breakneck speed. Nearly every state has embraced some level of legalization, from medical use to full-on recreational freedom. But here’s the sad kicker: just because THC is legal where you live, doesn’t mean it flies at work.

The biggest wrinkle? THC’s legality is oftentimes at odds between state and federal laws—and they’ll occasionally clash like rival siblings. Even hemp-derived beverages, like ours, fall into a bit more of a gray space thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill which federally legalized hemp (and  there’s still some regulatory hurdles to be cognizant of regardless of where you live). That said, “legal” doesn’t always equate to “workplace-approved.” Many companies maintain drug-free policies regardless of local laws—something to consider before getting your THC-bevvy happy hour approved by HR.

  1. Workplace Policies & Drug Testing

A casual drink at the office holiday party? Usual fine. A THC seltzer during the afternoon Zoom happy hour? That may be a different story (unless your company is as cool as ours 😉). One of the most common questions about workplace cannabis use is: Can my employer drug test me if THC is legal in my state? Short answer: usually, yes.

Even as attitudes toward cannabis shift, many industries—like healthcare, finance, and government—aren’t exactly rushing to rewrite their policies. Some have strict zero-tolerance rules, and even remote workers aren’t off the hook. If your company prohibits THC use, it doesn’t matter whether you’re sipping on a Fable while answering emails from your couch. A drug test could still land you in hot water.

The takeaway? Read the fine print of your company’s policy before assuming that “legal” means “allowed.”

  1. Performance & Productivity Considerations

Let’s be real: not all THC experiences are created equal. Some people feel a mild, functional buzz, while others are staring into space, zen-ing out like they’re at the spa. The way THC hits you depends on your metabolism, dosage, and tolerance—and unlike a casual glass of wine, a THC beverage high can come on fast and strong.

That said, for some, a THC drink (like Fable) can be a game-changer—sparking creativity, easing anxiety, or making high-stress workdays feel a little less soul-crushing. But if your job involves heavy decision-making, deadlines, or, you know, operating heavy machinery, THC might not be the best productivity hack.

The Bottom Line: Can You or Can’t You?

If you work in a creative, self-employed, or cannabis-friendly industry, your THC beverage will likely not raise any eyebrows. But if you’re in a more traditional corporate setting, err on the side of caution. Always check your company’s policies before making THC part of your workday routine.

At the end of the day, the stigma around cannabis is fading, but workplace rules haven’t necessarily caught up. Know the laws, understand your employer’s stance, and—most importantly—know how THC affects you before making a decision.
